"Buy the Truth and Sell It Not"

In Prov.23:23 the Proverb writer encourages us to “Buy the truth and sell it not”.   Why is truth important?  Why should we buy it and never let go of it?

Truth should be bought because of what it can do for us.  Truth can set us free from the bondage of sin when it is obeyed.  Jesus said, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free” (John 8:32).  We are saved by truth.   Paul wrote, “and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing because the refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness” (2 Thess.2:9-12).  The truth is what sanctifies and sets us apart.  Listen to John 17:17: “Sanctify them by truth, your word is truth”.

Once we have found and bought truth we should never sell it.  To sell the truth is to forsake and turn from it.  James said, “My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins” (James 5:19-20).  To sell the truth will result in spiritual death.

We invite you to come a study with us from God’s word as we seek to find the truth that we might buy it and never sell it.
