Blinded By Pride
“Thou art the man!”
These words, spoken by Nathan the prophet, finally persuaded King David to acknowledge his sin with Bathsheba and the shame of murdering her husband in an effort to cover it up. A careful reading of 2 Samuel 11 shows that God tried again and again to get David to recognize his sin. Instead of repenting, David only made matters worse by ignoring God at every turn.
By the time Nathan came to David, he had become so proficient at ignoring God that he couldn’t even see himself in Nathan’s now famous parable. David unknowingly condemned himself by declaring that the rich man who without pity killed the poor man’s beloved lamb deserved to die. The reason David was so blind is simple. It was pride. Pride is a terribly danger sin. Not only does it blind us to our own faults, but it also makes us deaf to the sincere reproof of those who would point out legitimate faults and shortcomings.
The next time someone criticizes you, don’t let your own pride cause you to be blind or deaf.
